The air suspension will start pumping air even if the key is not in the ignition. Bmw cars aren't known for having air conditioning problems, but if the air isn't blowing cold when the temperature rises, that doesn't matter for much. There may be small differences in other models and variations. My 2002 x5 was sagging in the rear end and suspension was rough and bouncie.
